VSB SUPERINTENDENT’S TRIBUTE HONOREE AWARD

Chen received the VSB Superintendent’s Tribute Honoree at the Vancouver School Board on January 28, 2026. This award is given to individuals within the VSB community that have demonstrated outstanding leadership, community work, volunteer, and general impact to the broader community. Kyle Chen is the first student to receive this award.

This award shared Kyle’s background as a senior student at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School. With his interest in architecture and design, the VSB highlighted his public displays from his YVR model to his MOV model. The presentation also went over Chen’s latest work which is collaborated with the VSB called “The Shoal”. A full wooden, hand crafted display for the VSB Board Office, which will soon be permanently displayed in the year of 2026.

VSB Superintendent McGregor describes Kyle Chen as a leader in the community, and shares the best of VSB students. This award highlights how young people like Kyle can contribute to public art spaces through meaningful storytelling.

The award plaque is a specially crafted commemorative piece designed to honor the VSB Super Tribute Honoree with elegance and meaning. Each plaque is created by Spirit Works Gallery, a respected Vancouver artisan studio known for their handcrafted work that often reflects community and collaboration in its design — incorporating symbolic imagery that speaks to shared journeys and achievement. The finished plaque features the honoree’s name and year of recognition, engraved to symbolize lasting impact and excellence in service to the school board community.

Chen thanks the VSB Superintendent for recognizing his work through this award, the VSB Trustees for nominating him, and his supporters from his school, friends, and family.

Chen looks forward to continuing his work as a young leader and designer and hopes to inspire youth through architecture and design.
